Walks

Beinn Mheadhoin

Summit height 739m total height ascended approximately 880m + approximately 11.75km.

Start from the new car park by Loch Uisgae Dam, follow the path around / over the dam towards Allt Ruadh; due North of Meall a Chaorainn. The path disappears then follow the spring up to and on to the top 514m. From here a great vista opens up and the summit of Beinn Mheadhoin can be seen in the distance as a dramatic ridge. Meall Na Greine is the next target 609m, although to avoid the summit and skirt round will save energy; not a lot, as there is a drop down before the final assault. Heading virtually South aim for the source of Allt Choire Shilachan which crosses the metal rusty posts, remnants of a fence marking the boundaries between two estates Ardtornish and Kingairloch. The fence posts are a handy guide as it skirts around Meall na Greine. Once at this top the final summit is clearly visible, dropping down to the head of a pass Beallach a Choire Bhain, at its Eastern edge marked by a large stone cairn. All this area is covered with exposed granite rock, and the going underfoot considering there are no paths is relatively good. From the pass care should be taken in crossing the stream, after heavy rain a detour up stream may be required. Once across the stream the fence line is a good indicator safely away from the edge, a mini summit exists to the West of the main peak, a small cairn marks the spot. From here the summit cairn is clearly visible with a trig point hidden beyond.

The views are fantastic from the summit, in fact for the majority of the walk, however the views to the South are hidden until the summit ridge is reached.

The return journey was the same up to Meall na Greine however from here follow the ridge North East to Sgurr Shalachan and Cregan nan Simileirean (538m). The way down was via the stream however the gully is very narrow and may not be viable after heavy rain, if in doubt follow the ridge down and aim for the main stream Allt Choire Shalachain, much lower down the estate have put in a bridge and a path which crosses the stream.

Started 11am; reached the summit at 2.00pm (long lunch on top) back at the car by 6.00pm.

Specific Observations:

  • Sundew in flower in small corrie up to Mealla Chaorainn on the Allt Ruadh.
  • 2 Golden Eagles mobbing a White Tailed Eagle over summit.
  • Herd of over fifty Red Deer - Stags & Hinds.
